Synopsis
Edward Wilson (1872-1912) was Junior Surgeon and Vertebrate Zoologist on the British Antarctic Expedition of 1901-4 and Chief of Scientific Staff on Captain Scott's last ill-fated Antarctic expedition of 1910-12. The only officer with Scott, he formed a close and influential partnership with him and became his loyal confidant. He was part of the Southern Party with Shackleton and Scott on the 1901 expedition; they reached the furthest point south, and Scott named the Cape after Wilson.

Great!
With Scott in the Antarctic by Isobel WilliamsAs a child growing up in Britain in the aftermath of WW2 I devoured stories about explorers, POW escapers and other adventurous Britons, and it all began with the film "Scott of the Antarctic" in 1948. Given my young age I was so totally focused on Robert Falcon Scott that, in later years, I could not remember any of the other characters who were part of this great tragedy, except perhaps for Titus Oates and his selfless departure from the doomed group. Now, thanks to Isobel Williams' well-researched book, I'm intimately aware of the significant contribution made by Edward Adrian Wilson, who made it to the pole with Scott and died on the return trip. (By the way, according to the IMDB, Harold Warrender played Wilson in the film.)The book recounts the story of a man who became, through the course of his life and two Antarctic expeditions, a pillar of strength and security for those around him. Although Wilson went through young manhood, including medical training, with a great deal of uncertainty and ill-health, his life blossomed when he met his soul-mate and found his true calling as an artist and naturalist. "March of the Penguins", which won the 2006 Oscar for best documentary, owes a great debt to the initial research on Emperor Penguins done by Edward Wilson during his two Antarctic expeditions with Scott.Isobel Williams has painted a wonderfully detailed and sympathetic word-portrait of a remarkable man. "With Scott in the Antarctic" is a worthy achievement for the author and a very worthwhile investment for the reader.Bill RossToronto
Have to say to anyone who is interested in factual adventure books to pick this one up and have a read. Inspirational in the face of adversity and shows the human nature and character of 'Scott' which separates the normal and the exceptional. As a young reader in my mid 20's I was hesitant to embark on reading such a book but Isobel Williams allows the younger reader to relate and writes in a way which I found extremely encapsulating and intriguing. Would recommend to anyone.
I totally recommend this fine biography of the man Captain Scott described as "Tough as steel on the traces, never wavering from start to finish." How do you like that for a tell phrase - "never wavering?"
A fascinating and insightful account of Edward WIlson's life and discoveries. Williams writing is articulate and entertaining!
